UPDATE: The mini-coaching program for freelancers is now open for enrollment. If you’re interested, click here to read all about it.

I’m a do-it-yourself’er if there ever was one.

When I see a purse I like, for example, my first thought is, “How can I make that myself?” In fact, my sister-in-law laughingly asked as I bought a skirt to turn into an apron, “Why don’t you just buy an apron?” Heck, I even insist on baking my own bread, occasionally, and my own pizza, once a week.

A lot of satisfaction comes from creating something with your own efforts.

But sometimes doing something ALL BY YOURSELF is just plain foolish.

For example, I didn’t learn how to knit all by myself — even if I did buy half a dozen books to get started. No, I had to have somebody show me exactly how the yarn should sit on the knitting needle. I had to have someone knowledgeable to answer my questions. And, thanks to the Internet, I can access the wisdom of experienced knitters even if they’re thousands of miles away from me.

Oh and don’t let me get started about maintaining my blogs all by myself. I tried it… and managed to “blow up” one of my blogs. It cost me hours of grief and hundreds of dollars to get my blog back, not to mention many months to get it back to page one of Google for its main keywords. Today, I leave my blogs in the capable hands of my VAs. I sleep much better at night, and can focus on the parts of my business I’m actually good at and enjoy.

It’s the same thing with freelancing.

You can read all the books written by the most successful freelancers. And, in fact, I highly recommend you do (including my own freelancing stuff, if you’re interested). I’ve learned tons from the books I myself have read, as long as I’ve taken action on them.

But sometimes, you need a more experienced person “holding your hand,” so to speak, answering your questions. No book can anticipate all your questions, after all.

For the past few weeks, I’ve been thinking of how I can better support you, my readers, in your freelancing journey. Sure, I could write another ebook… but I’d really like to do something that can have a concrete impact in your freelancing career.

My friend, Laura Spencer, and I put our heads together and we think we’ve come up with a way to serve you in a more personal way. (Laura, in case you don’t know, is a veteran freelance writer and Senior Editor of Freelance Folder.) With our upcoming offering, you’ll get exactly the answers you need to take your freelancing to the next level.

The thing is, because what we’d like to do is more hands-on than an ebook, we can only accommodate 20 freelancers at this time.

If you think you need our help…

I can’t give you all the details yet, but if you’re interested, sign up for the early bird list below, and you’ll be one of the first to know when we open our doors.

The doors are open: you can join our mini-coaching program here.

Remember, there’s no obligation when you get on the early bird list. It only means you’ll get first dibs at whatever Laura and I have in store for freelancers this coming February. The “program” will be limited to 20 freelancers only, and once those seats are filled, we can’t accept any more.

10 Reasons Why Every Web Writer Should Become An Internet Marketer

This article gives 10 reasons why becoming an Internet marketer is beneficial for any web writer.

As a web writer, your clients are Internet marketers or entrepreneurs who promote products and/or services through the Internet. How’d you like to become one of THEM?

Whether you’re aspiring to become a web writer or already have some experience, it’s an excellent idea for you to become an Internet marketer yourself.

I got started in Internet marketing soon after I started writing from home. I bought an established website and got immersed in website creation and maintenance, search engine optimization, link building, affiliate marketing, and list building.

Unfortunately, as I got busier and busier with client work, my Internet marketing efforts have fallen on the side. That said, they still continue to add a small additional income stream for me. Most of them run almost on autopilot, and the profits actually increase as time goes by even if my niche sites are all but neglected.

Here are 10 good reasons why I think Internet marketing is a good idea for web writers:

1. Keep busy while waiting for clients.

When you’re new and don’t have a steady stream of clients yet — or you’re going through a lean time — your Internet marketing business will keep you busy.

2. You can practice and sharpen your skills.

Sure, you’ve spent many hours and dollars to get excellent training. However, the lessons you get from actually implementing what you learn in real life — through your own Internet marketing efforts — are priceless and cannot be absorbed as effectively in training room or home study course.

3. You’ll have a laboratory to experiment in.

If only there were never-fail formulas for web writers to follow! But the truth is, even tried-and-true techniques sometimes fail. It’s good to have your own “lab” to see what works, what doesn’t, and when — instead of experimenting on your clients’ businesses.

4. Build up your portfolio.

By having your own Internet marketing projects, you’ll have sample works in your portfolio, even if you’re just starting out. No sales pages to show your prospects? Write an ebook and create a sales page for it. Nobody ever said your portfolio can’t consist of your own promotional materials.

5. Earn extra money.

Internet marketing is hot because it works. You really can earn money “while you sleep.” It may take time, but you’ll soon see the fruits of your efforts. You may even decide to give up freelancing altogether, eventually.

6. You’ll better understand and empathize with your prospects and clients.

If you’re an Internet marketer yourself, you’ll be thoroughly familiar with the Internet marketing jargon. You’ll know exactly where your prospects and clients are coming from, as well as what they really need and want from you, their web writer. This means you’ll be a better service provider to them.

7. Promote your services online.

You can use Internet marketing to promote your web writing business. It’s the perfect fit: use the web to attract clients and prove you really know what you’re doing.

8. Set yourself apart from your competitors.

Internet marketing has a steep learning curve and requires some investment in money and a lot of investment in time. Few writers are willing to make such an investment, which means you’ll stand head and shoulders above your competition.

9. You work better with other service providers.

As an Internet marketer, you may have to hire other service providers yourself, such as graphic designers, web coders, programmers and virtual assistants. By doing so, you’ll be better able to communicate and work with them when they’re involved in your clients’ web projects.

10. You rise to the level of “consultant.”

When you have Internet marketing expertise and experience, you’re not just a freelance web writer, but you can be an online marketing consultant as well. You can confidently give your clients advice, because you’re in the same boat and possibly have more experience than they do. As such, you can charge more than plain-vanilla web writers.

As you can see, becoming an Internet marketer will make you a better web writer and consultant. It will also give you alternative streams of income, which is very important for all self-employed individuals.

If you need help getting started, check out Nick Usborne’s How to Write Your Own Money-Making Websites.

Internet marketing is rewarding and fun, and will make you a more profitable web writer. Try it!

PS: I looked far and wide for an Internet marketing program to recommend to you. In fact, I’ve spent thousands of dollars buying this blueprint and that program. A lot of them are good–if you follow the plan and actually implement them. However, most give bits and pieces of the Internet marketing puzzle, leaving you to figure the rest out for yourself. That’s why I picked Nick Usborne’s program to recommend in this post. It can take you from zero to profit. The investment is modest (compared to what I paid to learn the same thing), and you get a full year to decide whether it was worth it for you or you get your money back. Learn more about it here:

You may think it’s corny, but, yes, this is yet another blog post about New Year’s resolutions for 2010.

But this isn’t like every other New Year post out there. This one is focused on one thing alone: helping you make more money in 2010.

No matter what any one says, there are really only 3 ways to make more money from freelancing (or any other business, for that matter):

get more clients

get more projects per client

get more money per client

So the following 10 resolutions are all designed to help you achieve one or more of these things. If you’re feeling particularly bold, go ahead and do all of them.

10 New Year resolutions for more profitable freelancing:

1. Market your services continuously

It’s easy to forget about marketing when you’re inundated with client work. However, it’s important to keep actively marketing your services even when you don’t need clients – to avoid the feast and famine phenomenon that can be tough for freelancers.

Some ways to promote your services regularly:

publish a blog post at least weekly

interact in an online forum at least a few minutes a week

get on Twitter and Facebook for 10-15 minutes a day

contact existing clients with new offers at least every 3 months

2. Increase your rates

Want to make more money without working more? Then jack up your rates! If you haven’t increased your rates in the last 3 months, then it’s long overdue.

Many freelancers are nervous about this, but many freelancers swear they get even more clients after increasing their rates. That has been my personal experience as well.

If you don’t believe me, just try increasing your fees by 12% – that’s all. Try it and see what happens.

3. Upsell to existing clients.

This is one way to get more business out of existing clients. As soon as they sign you up for a project, offer a to do a related task for them for a small additional fee. For example, if your client just hired you to write 5 articles, offer to write 5 more articles at a reduced fee per article.

Or offer to turn the articles into a special report. Ask yourself: “What else does my client need to make the most of this project, that I can do for them?”

Just ask. The worst that can happen is they’ll say, “No, thanks.” But you’ve got that first project to begin with.

4. Add one or two recurring services.

This is related to number 3 above, but this time, we’re after assignments that need to be done on a regular basis, month in and month out.

For example, if you create websites for clients, why not offer a monthly service of backing up their sites and monitoring their stats for a fee?

5. Specialize.

If you’re still trying to attract every possible client, think about focusing on a more specific target client. Come up of a specific niche that you could specialize in, depending on your experience, training and interest. Make sure the prospective clients in that niche are those who want your services and have the resources to pay your rates without resistance.

Remember that specialists make more income than generalists. You’ll find marketing your services to be easier as well.

6. Sharpen your skills.

If you want to become a premium freelancer, then you need to be better than most service providers out there. Invest in books, training and mentorship to make you a better writer, graphic designer, computer programmer, photographer, virtual assistant… whatever you are right now. Be committed to keep improving yourself.

7. Expand your networks.

As you specialize, increase your rates and move to more profitable niches, you’ll find yourself outgrowing your current clients. This is a natural phenomenon and one you should welcome. It’s a sign that your freelancing business is growing.

However, it requires that you expand your networks so that you will continue to attract those clients who are perfect for you right now.

8. Blog more often.

When I wrote The Savvy Freelancer’s Website Secrets: How to Create a Client Magnet Online, I wasn’t convinced that blogging was necessary for every freelancer. Now I am.

Blogging:

gives you a web presence

provides a dynamic and interactive brochure for your freelancing services

showcases your expertise

attracts prospective clients and allows you to start building a relationship with them, even before they hire you

gives you a central hub for your social networking activities

If you’re not blogging yet, then start blogging. If you have been blogging, publish more often. At least once a week. And while you’re at it, get an account from Aweber and start building your list of prospective clients.

9. Start a new, preferably passive, stream of income.

It doesn’t matter if you’re making more than enough money with freelancing right now. It’s still a good idea to have multiple streams of income. And the more passive it is, the better.

Some ideas (for both passive and non-passive income):

do some affiliate marketing from your blog

sell digital or physical products

organize live classes or seminars

individual or group coaching via telephone or webinar

10. Save more.

Here’s one advice I need to give myself: spend less money and save more of it! As financial experts say, “It’s not how much you make that matters, but how much you keep.”

So spend your hard-earned money wisely, and save for a rainy day (not to mention retirement).

I hope at least some of these New Year’s resolutions will resonate with you and help you to have a more profitable freelancing year in 2010.

Tell me: which ones appeal to you? Which ones will you actually do in 2010? And why?

Are you ready to quit your job and dive into freelancing?

Hold on: First, see if you can find freelance work in your area of expertise on the Internet. This is a good gauge of what the market demands. For starters, check out the hiring trends at Elance, one of the most popular job sites for freelancers.

Some skills, such as the ability to write coherently or do software design for clients of all types, are highly marketable and you should really have no difficulty whatsoever finding a goldmine of work.

On the other hand, if you are only able to do tasks that are not as easily marketable on a freelance basis, you will have much more difficulty finding work for your freelance operation.

Currently some of the most popular fields for freelancing include writing, editing, photography, web and graphic design, web design, software design and coding.

If the demand for your skills are low, don’t quit your day job just yet. But do explore how you can expand your skills and expertise in the areas where there is a lot of demand.
