Thanks, Brent! I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks a "redundant" approach is best. Well, better safe than sorry!

I'm afraid I'm not techie enough to do my own encryption, so I rely completely on the online storage provider to do this.

Coincidentally, I have also been pondering this issue a lot lately. One difficulty inherent in all backup methods is what I call the "stranded effect." As your physical storage fills up with data, migrating that data becomes progressively more of a hassle. Similar difficulties exist when considering cloud-based solutions. Words like "unlimited" mask the functional difficulty of migrating or retrieving all that data when you need it.
I use a combination of flash dives, GMail attachments, Evernote, and cloud storage to backup my important data. Evernote is great for syncing data across computers as well. I think that the element of uncertainty almost mandates a redundant spproach, so that if one or two systems go down, you still have a fallback position.
One last thought: some kinds of personal data are risky to store on any medium. I recommend using an encryption utility to scramble such files before backing them up.
